Trees are valuable assets on your property, and it is important to ensure that whomever you hire to care for your trees has appropriate qualifications and training. Whenever you are doing work on a tree, we urge you to consult with an arborist certified by the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA). ISA-certified arborists can help you determine if your trees are healthy, need any care, and if they have become dangerous. If a tree company wants to remove one of your trees, it is worth seeking a second opinion from an ISA-certified arborist.

Arborists generally provide free assessments. They can prune and treat tree-health issues before they come to the point that tree removal is necessary. It is generally a good idea to have your trees checked at least every five years, to ensure that they are healthy and to address any new issues.

The STC recommends the following approach to find a tree care company:

  1. Use a search engine to find results for tree care companies that serve Abington Township.

  2. Look at the reviews online to see if the company seems reputable. Many companies also have websites that specifically say they employ ISA-certified arborists.

  3. Call the tree care company. Ask if they employ an ISA-certified arborist and if that arborist can come out to assess your trees for free. If they say yes, ask for the name of the arborist.

  4. Confirm the arborist’s credentials by going to the ISA website, where you can verify credentials using the person’s name: https://www.treesaregood.org/findanarborist/arboristsearch. Only hire a tree care company if you are sure the arborist is ISA-certified.

Although the ISA website lets you search for arborists in your area, limitations with that search function limit its usefulness unless you already have the name of an arborist.
