Home MenuRecommended Trees for Abington
The Abington Shade Tree Commission recommends that you plant native trees whenever possible. We have created a list of recommended trees to aid you whether you are planting at your home, business, or a natural area (always make sure you have permission first). The list is applicable to a variety of circumstances, including for street trees along roads or in parking lots, in small yards, or for large shade trees. Many of these trees have cultivated varieties, or cultivars, that have been selected for features such as a more compact size, better fall color, and other traits that make them more attractive to homeowners and businesses. Because of the lack of genetic diversity associated with cultivars, consider planting the straight species when possible. For selections like American Elm, however, disease-resistant cultivars are a must - just be careful to not inadvertently purchase a non-native "hybrid."
These trees can be purchased at a variety of local nurseries. In collaboration with Abington’s Environmental Advisory Council, a list of nurseries is here.
