About the Project

War Memorial Park Committee volunteers, comprised of five local Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) posts and residents have begun working on the "War Memorial Park" project to rehabilitate and repair the existing Veterans Memorial at Old York Road in front of Temple Beth Am and Penn State- Abington dormitory in Abington Township illustrated in the map below.

When completed the memorial, which is difficult to see due to current landscaping and layout, is underutilized, and in need of repair, will be a tribute to all who are and have served to defend our beloved United States especially those located in Abington Township. The goal of the project is to provide a space for veterans, their families, friends and neighbors to gather and reflect on the sacrifice and perseverance that our loved ones and community members have endured to preserve the American freedom and serve as an everlasting tribute to veterans near and far.

The project will include a complete renovation of the memorial with the relocation of two existing memorials and the installment of several new tributes. It will also include a reflection pond, landscaping, hardscaping and sitting areas. There will be a monument to pay tribute to each war since World War I, as well as, a statue and monument paying tribute to all military veterans. Examples of the type of tributes can be found below. The total cost of the project will be $200,000.00.

Although the Township owns the property and is supportive of the project through in-kind services, this project is not a Township effort and will not be funded with Township dollars. This project is being spearheaded by local volunteers who are committed to seeing the space reinvented and it serve as a community space for reflection. Subsequently, the project will be funded through generous public donations, grants and the selling of memorial bricks and benches.
